Viewing Room

All Visual Arts

Viewing Room

AVA exhibitions rarely disappoint and the Viewing room was no exception.
Held in the crypt at the church at number 1 Marylebone
the atmosphere is suitably dark and gloriously eerie.
I first stumbled upon all visual arts in 2011 during Frieze week
with an exhibition entitled

Vanitas: The Transience of Earthly Pleasures
It completely blew me away and introduced me to the likes of
Kate MccGwire and Charles Matton

Kate's large scale installations are deliciously dark and deeply powerful,
while Charles Matton works in miniature
constructing incredible detailed environments set into a glass box.
They really must be seen to be believed.
This annual event is one of my
favourites on the arts calendar topped only by Frieze.

Unus Safardiar
Spectacularly detailed sculpture

Super- hyper- realist painter.
Believe it or not this is an oil painting.
you may be more familiar with his piece in the national portrait gallery
of Nobel Prize winner Sir Paul Nurse

A master
Creating extraordinary miniature environments

 Following the Vanitas theme
  her work is fabulously macabre.

Deliciously dark.

Giant Polar bear roars to save the Arctic

Massive Polar bear puppet walks to protect the arctic for Greenpeace

photo © kristian buus

This enormous puppet reminds me of the 'Sultans Elephant
which walked the streets of London in May 2006.
The Polar bear which is manned by people will walk through London as part protest,
part performance, in response to the increased exploitation of the Arctic waters
and will be the focal point for the UK leg of the Greenpeace event on september 15th, 2013.

V&A - Memory Palace

Le Gun Installation

My favourite piece in the exhibition.
This amazingly detailed black and white installation
was conceived and illustrated by Le Gun.

Muriels Kitchen

I discovered Muriels Kitchen today, just around the corner from South Kensington tube station in Pelham St.
Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff but sadly I only had time for quick coffee.
The cakes looked absolutely delicious and I will certainly pop in again very soon to sample one or two.

Ormond Gigli - Girls in the Window

Ormond Gigli says;
“I was inspired to somehow immortalize those buildings. I had the vision of 43 women in formal dress adorning the windows of the skeletal facade,” Gigli writes. “The day before the buildings were razed, the 43 women … climbed the old stairs and took their places in the windows. I was set up on my fire escape across the street, directing the scene, with bullhorn in hand. Of course I was concerned for the models’ safety, as some were daring enough to pose out on the crumbling sills.”

I can just imagine the models vying for attention!

Irving Penn
Harlequin Dress 1950

Although I have never met my absolutely charming client, Anthony Terrana,
we have spoke and emailed frequently over the past twelve years.

When he told me to take a sneak preview of his collection at Phillips Auction House in London (which happens to be just round the corner at Claridges!) of course I just had to go and see it.

I was amazed and utterly surprised to see many significant and iconic works on display
from luminaries such as Man Ray, Irving Penn and Diane Arbus....to name a few.
I wish I could be in New york for the up and coming auction, it promises to be quite something!!

Diane Arbus
Identical Twins - Cathleen and Colleen Rosselle  1966

Man Ray
